Is a mammogram done with a digital mammography system?

In digital mammography, an electronic detector records the X-ray image instead of film. The image appears on a workstation where the radiologist can adjust its view and examine breast tissue. During the test, the breast is positioned and compressed between plates so the image is steady and tissue is spread for review. A digital system may also be part of equipment that offers additional mammographic techniques, but the specific images taken depend on the machine and the clinical request.

Tell the imaging staff about pregnancy, breastfeeding, implants, recent breast procedures, or a painful area. Avoid deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion on the chest and underarms on the appointment day if the centre advises this, because products can appear on an image. You will usually change from the waist up and have each breast positioned separately. Stay still during exposure and mention discomfort so the technologist can help with positioning. Bring prior images or reports when requested.

Contact a clinician promptly about a new breast lump, nipple discharge that is not expected, a new nipple or skin change, or persistent localised breast pain. Imaging should not delay assessment of a rapidly changing breast or severe redness and swelling. Seek urgent help for fainting, breathing difficulty, or feeling severely unwell alongside breast symptoms.

Ask whether digital mammography is suitable for your symptoms or screening plan, whether earlier images will be compared, and when the report will be shared. You can also ask whether compression may be uncomfortable, whether extra views might be needed, and what follow-up happens after an unclear result.
