Is a mammogram done with breast tomosynthesis?

During breast tomosynthesis, the breast is placed on the detector and compressed, as it is for a conventional mammogram. The X-ray tube moves over a limited arc and records images from different angles. Software reconstructs those images into thin slices that the radiologist reviews. This reduces the effect of tissue overlap in the displayed images, but it does not mean the breast is physically scanned in layers. The appointment and positioning are familiar to people who have had mammography before.

Bring details of previous breast imaging if the centre does not already have them. Tell the technologist about pregnancy, breastfeeding, implants, recent surgery, or a tender area. Avoid applying products to the breasts or underarms unless instructed otherwise. During compression, tell the technologist if the pressure is unusually painful so positioning can be checked. Results may be given directly or sent to the clinician who requested the test.

Arrange prompt medical review for a new lump, unexplained nipple discharge, a new change in nipple shape, skin puckering, or persistent one-sided breast swelling. These symptoms need clinical assessment even if a previous mammogram was reassuring. Seek urgent help if breast redness and swelling are accompanied by severe illness, rapid progression, or breathing difficulty.
