Is a mammogram done with 3D mammography?

A standard mammogram creates two-dimensional X-ray images of compressed breast tissue. 3D mammography takes several low-dose images as the X-ray tube moves in an arc, then combines them into thin image slices. This can help the radiologist inspect tissue layer by layer, particularly when overlapping tissue makes a two-dimensional image harder to interpret. The breast is still positioned and compressed between plates, and the examination remains a mammogram rather than an operation.

Wear a two-piece outfit so the upper body can be uncovered easily, and avoid deodorant, powder, or lotion on the breasts or underarms on the day unless the imaging centre says otherwise. Tell the staff if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have breast implants, or have a new breast concern. Each breast is positioned separately and briefly compressed. Remaining still helps reduce blurred images. The radiologist may recommend additional views or another test if the images need clarification.

A mammogram is not an emergency test. Seek prompt clinical assessment for a new breast lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion that is new, or redness and swelling that do not settle. Do not wait for routine imaging if a breast change is rapidly worsening or you feel acutely unwell. The imaging team can explain when results will be available and who will contact you.

Ask whether 3D mammography is available and appropriate for your reason for imaging, whether earlier images should be compared, and whether you need any additional views. Clarify how to receive the report and what follow-up is planned for an inconclusive finding.
