Is malaria safe in travellers?

Malaria is caused by parasites transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Early symptoms may include fever, chills, headache, tiredness, muscle aches, nausea, or vomiting, and they can resemble other illnesses.

Symptoms may begin during a trip or after returning home. A person can feel well between exposure and illness, so the absence of symptoms during travel does not rule out later malaria. The risk varies with destination, season, accommodation, and mosquito exposure.

Before travel, ask a travel clinician about the areas you will visit and whether preventive medicine is appropriate. Take prescribed prophylaxis as directed, and protect your skin with clothing and insect repellent.

Use screens, air conditioning, or a mosquito net where available. If you develop fever after travel to a malaria area, mention the travel history immediately rather than waiting for symptoms to settle.

Seek urgent medical care for fever or chills after visiting a malaria area, especially with confusion, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, fainting, or a seizure.

Tell the clinician the countries and regions visited, the dates of travel, and any preventive medicine taken. Emergency symptoms need emergency services; do not delay while trying home remedies or leftover medication.
