Smell can return unevenly after COVID-19. Some people notice a gradual return, while others experience distorted or unpleasant smells as the system recovers. Do not use nasal medicines or supplements for this purpose without advice.

Arrange assessment when smell loss remains troublesome, worsens, or affects eating and safety. Seek urgent help after a head injury or if smell loss occurs with severe headache, confusion, new weakness, or breathing difficulty. One-sided blockage, recurrent bleeding, or severe facial pain also warrants prompt review.
