Is laser treatment for nail fungus done with Nd:YAG laser?

Nd:YAG refers to the laser medium and wavelength family used by a device. In nail treatment, the clinician directs energy across the affected nail and surrounding area. The goal is to address the treatment area while allowing the nail to grow out gradually. A discoloured or thick nail is not automatically fungal; trauma, psoriasis and other conditions can look similar.

Laser may be offered as part of a broader plan rather than as a stand-alone answer. The clinician may examine the nail, inspect nearby skin and decide whether testing or another treatment is needed.

Have the nail assessed before booking a laser course, especially if several nails are changing or the diagnosis is uncertain. Mention diabetes, circulation problems, reduced sensation, immune conditions and medicines that affect healing. Keep nails clean and dry, avoid sharing nail tools and follow instructions about trimming or removing polish.

Ask how many visits may be needed, what improvement can be judged, and whether topical or oral treatment is part of the plan. A healthy-looking nail takes time to grow, so appearance may lag behind treatment.

Arrange medical review if the skin becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen or painful, or if drainage develops. Seek prompt advice for fever, spreading redness or a rapidly worsening wound. A dark streak, bleeding, sudden nail separation or a change affecting one nail should also be assessed rather than assumed to be fungus.

Ask whether the nail change has been confirmed as fungal, why an Nd:YAG device is suitable, what other treatments may be combined, and how recurrence will be prevented.
