Short answer

Knee osteoarthritis can often be managed safely in older adults, but symptoms and treatment choices should be assessed around mobility, balance, and other health conditions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Pain, stiffness, and reduced confidence with movement

Understanding the condition

Knee osteoarthritis develops when the tissues that help a joint glide and absorb load change over time. It may cause pain with walking or stairs, stiffness after rest, reduced confidence, or difficulty standing from a chair. The severity of symptoms does not always match an image, so assessment considers movement, strength, function, sleep, falls risk, and the person’s goals.

Older adults may also have heart, kidney, stomach, vision, or balance problems that influence medicine and exercise choices. A clinician can review these factors before recommending pain relief, walking aids, strengthening, weight-management support, injections, or an operation. Gentle, progressive activity can help preserve function, but a sudden flare or new symptom should not automatically be attributed to arthritis.

Making movement safer

Use a stable surface and supportive footwear, and consider a walking aid assessment if the knee gives way or balance is uncertain. Physiotherapy can work on thigh and hip strength, flexibility, stair technique, and confidence with daily tasks. Break demanding activities into manageable periods and change position regularly. Take medicines only as prescribed, especially if you have kidney disease, stomach ulcers, heart problems, or take blood thinners. Keep a record of pain, swelling, walking ability, and falls.

When to seek care

Seek prompt assessment for a hot, very swollen, or suddenly painful knee, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Get medical advice after a fall if you cannot bear weight, the knee looks deformed, or movement is suddenly restricted. Urgent care is needed for new calf swelling with chest pain or breathlessness, or for a leg that becomes cold, pale, numb, or weak.

Questions for your doctor

What is the safest exercise plan for my balance and other conditions? Would a cane or frame help, and how should it be adjusted? Which pain medicines are suitable with my current treatment? What changes mean the knee needs reassessment?

Questions people ask

Should an older adult stop exercising with knee osteoarthritis?

Usually the plan is adapted rather than stopped; suitable strengthening and movement can support function when introduced gradually.

Is new knee swelling always osteoarthritis?

No. A hot, sudden, or unusually swollen knee may have another cause and should be assessed, particularly with fever or illness.
