Is IPL photofacial done with an IPL device?

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. Unlike a single-wavelength laser, an IPL device emits a broad range of light that can be filtered and adjusted. During a photofacial, the handpiece delivers controlled pulses to selected areas of skin. The light may be absorbed by pigment or visible blood vessels, while the settings are adapted to the person’s skin and concern.

A photofacial may be considered for concerns such as sun-related uneven tone, freckles, or facial redness, but it is not suitable for every skin type or every diagnosis. A consultation helps identify whether the colour change is appropriate to treat and whether another option is safer.

Tell the provider about recent tanning, medicines that increase light sensitivity, a history of cold sores, and products that irritate your skin. Follow instructions about sun avoidance and skincare before treatment. Afterward, protect the area from sunlight, use only recommended products, and do not pick at darkened or flaky spots while they settle.

Contact the provider if blistering, marked swelling, worsening pain, spreading redness, or signs of infection develop. Seek prompt assessment for eye pain or vision changes after facial treatment. Persistent lightening, darkening, or textural change should also be reviewed rather than treated again without advice.
