Short answer

Influenza is not always safe in children, so watch symptoms closely and seek advice when a child is very unwell.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How flu can affect a child

Influenza commonly causes fever, cough, sore throat, tiredness, headache and muscle aches. Children may also refuse feeds, vomit, have diarrhoea or become unusually sleepy. Most recover with supportive care, but illness can be more difficult for babies, children with asthma or other long-term conditions, and those who become dehydrated. A child’s overall behaviour, breathing and ability to drink matter as much as the temperature.

Care at home

Offer frequent fluids and continue breastfeeding or usual feeds where possible. Let the child rest, dress them comfortably and use only fever or pain medicine suitable for their age and health, following a clinician’s or product guidance. Keep the child away from vulnerable household members while fever and significant symptoms continue, and wash hands after wiping noses or handling tissues. Arrange medical advice early if the child is very young or has a chronic condition.

Warning signs

Get urgent help for struggling or unusually fast breathing, blue or grey lips, severe drowsiness, a seizure, a stiff neck, signs of dehydration, persistent vomiting, or a child who cannot be woken or is not responding normally. Seek prompt clinical advice when symptoms worsen after seeming to improve or fever continues with marked weakness.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether antiviral treatment is appropriate, how to manage fever for your child’s age, which fluids are suitable, and whether an underlying condition changes the monitoring plan.
