Is induction of labour done with oxytocin?

Oxytocin is a hormone that makes the uterus contract. In hospital, synthetic oxytocin is usually delivered through an intravenous drip, allowing the maternity team to change or stop the flow. It may be offered after the waters have broken or after another method has prepared the cervix. The response is assessed through contraction patterns and the baby's heart rate. Oxytocin is not the right first step for every person; the plan depends on the cervix, pregnancy history, reason for induction and whether the membranes have ruptured.

Ask where the drip will be placed and what monitoring will be used. Tell the team about a previous caesarean birth, uterine surgery, allergies, bleeding, painful contractions or reduced fetal movement. Contractions can become stronger as the dose rises, so discuss pain-relief choices before treatment begins. Never adjust an oxytocin drip yourself. During induction, report severe continuous pain, contractions with very little rest between them, heavy bleeding, dizziness, breathing trouble or feeling suddenly unwell. Tell the midwife promptly if fluid changes colour or smell, or if you notice less fetal movement. If you are at home before admission, contact your maternity unit for these symptoms or for regular painful contractions according to the instructions you were given.

Ask why oxytocin is recommended, whether your cervix needs preparation first, how the dose will be adjusted, how pain will be managed and what happens if contractions remain too strong or too weak.
