Is a hormonal coil done with a hormonal IUD device?

Hormonal coil, hormonal IUD, and intrauterine system describe the same general type of contraception: a small device positioned in the uterus that releases a progestogen. The hormone mainly thickens cervical mucus and changes the uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg and reducing the chance of pregnancy.

The device is inserted through the cervix during a clinical appointment. A clinician checks whether it is suitable, discusses alternatives, and confirms the device’s position after insertion when needed. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Tell the clinician about pregnancy possibility, unexplained bleeding, pelvic infection symptoms, uterine problems, and previous difficulties with insertion. Ask about pain relief, when contraceptive protection begins, checking the threads, and the planned removal or replacement date.

Cramping and light bleeding can occur after insertion. Follow the aftercare instructions and attend a review if one is arranged. Do not pull the threads or attempt to remove the device yourself.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, unusual or foul-smelling discharge, very heavy bleeding, a positive pregnancy test, or threads that cannot be felt when you normally can. Emergency care is needed for collapse, severe pain, or heavy bleeding with weakness. These warning signs require assessment even though many users have mild early cramping.

Ask which device is suitable, how insertion will be performed, how long it is intended to remain in place, and what symptoms should prompt an examination.
