Is a GP consultation needed before a sick leave certificate?

A certificate is a clinical document, so the clinician may ask about symptoms, when they began, your job demands and whether you can work safely. The assessment may happen in person or through a remote consultation when the service considers that suitable.

The certificate may cover a specific period and may include advice about rest, follow-up or a gradual return. The clinician may not issue one if the available information does not support absence from work, or may recommend further assessment instead.

Contact your clinic early and ask about its certificate process, appointment options and any employer form that must be completed. Explain your symptoms, work duties, start date of absence, previous related episodes and any treatment you have tried.

Keep copies of relevant reports and tell the clinician about medicines, allergies and conditions that affect your ability to work. Send the certificate to your employer through the agreed channel, and arrange review if your symptoms continue beyond the stated period.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, new weakness, confusion, heavy bleeding or a rapidly worsening illness. A work certificate should not replace assessment when symptoms could signal a medical emergency.
