Is fracture fixation surgery done with an intramedullary nail?

An intramedullary nail is a metal rod placed inside the central canal of a long bone, such as the thighbone or shinbone. Locking screws at one or both ends can help control rotation and length. This arrangement supports the broken bone from within while healing occurs. It is not suitable for every fracture: the location, pattern, nearby joints, bone quality, soft-tissue condition, and overall health all influence the choice. Some operations use imaging during the procedure to guide placement.

Ask the surgeon why a nail is being recommended and whether another fixation method would be reasonable. Clarify when you may stand, walk, or use crutches, because instructions vary by fracture and fixation stability. Keep the wound clean, take prescribed medicines as directed, and attend follow-up visits. Physiotherapy may focus on joint movement, muscle activation, balance, and a gradual return to daily activities.

Report increasing wound redness, discharge, fever, worsening pain, new weakness, or numbness. Urgent assessment is needed for a suddenly cold or discoloured foot or hand, severe swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness. Do not increase weight-bearing simply because the incision looks healed; the bone may still need protection.
