Is fracture casting done with plaster of paris?

Plaster of Paris bandage is wetted and wrapped over padding, then moulded to support the injured body part in the position chosen by the clinician. It can be useful when close shaping is needed. A temporary splint or partial cast may be used while swelling is changing, because a tight circular cast can affect circulation.

The decision depends on the fracture's site and alignment, swelling, skin condition, and whether the limb needs firm support or room for swelling. The material itself does not determine the whole treatment plan; examination and follow-up checks remain important.

Keep the cast clean and dry, avoid pressing on soft areas while it sets, and never push items inside it. Elevate the limb when advised and gently move uncovered fingers or toes. Follow instructions about walking, lifting, and using crutches rather than testing the cast by putting extra load through it.

Watch for changes in comfort and circulation. Attend the planned review so the cast can be checked, changed, or removed at the appropriate stage.

Get urgent help for severe or increasing pain, a cast that feels too tight, numbness, new tingling, pale or blue fingers or toes, or inability to move them. Contact the treatment team if the cast becomes wet, cracked, loose, foul-smelling, or causes a sore spot or skin irritation.

Ask why plaster of Paris was selected, how to protect it while it sets, what movement or weight is permitted, which warning signs need urgent attention, and when the next examination or imaging review will occur.
