Is nappy rash safe in children?

Irritation from moisture, friction, urine or stool can make the covered skin red, sore or tender. It may affect the bottom, genital area or skin folds. A rash that involves the folds, has small surrounding spots, blisters, crusting or open skin may have a different cause, such as yeast or bacterial infection.

Children can become unsettled during nappy changes because the skin stings. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause, especially when the rash is spreading or not improving.

Change wet or soiled nappies promptly, clean with lukewarm water or a fragrance-free product, and pat rather than rub. Allow the skin to dry before applying a protective barrier cream. Give short periods without a nappy when practical, and avoid fragranced wipes, harsh soaps and scrubbing.

Use only treatments suitable for your child’s age and the affected skin. A pharmacist or clinician can advise when a medicated cream is needed and how it should be applied.

Arrange medical advice if the rash is very painful, rapidly spreading, blistered, bleeding, oozing or associated with fever. Contact a clinician if it does not start improving with gentle care or keeps returning. Seek urgent help if your child appears seriously unwell, is difficult to wake or is not drinking.
