Is genetic risk in related couples safe for women planning pregnancy?

When parents are biologically related, they are more likely to carry the same recessive gene change inherited from a shared ancestor. A child generally needs a relevant copy from both parents for a recessive condition to occur. Relationship alone cannot predict an individual child's health.

Risk depends on the degree of relation, family history, ancestry, and any known genetic condition. A family may have no obvious history because carriers can be healthy and unaware of their status.

Bring details of relatives with childhood illness, unexplained developmental differences, repeated pregnancy loss, infant deaths, or a known inherited condition.
