Is CDK4/6 inhibitor therapy done with CDK4/6 inhibitor drugs?

CDK4 and CDK6 are proteins involved in signals that help cells move through the cell cycle. In suitable cancers, an inhibitor drug blocks these signals and can slow the division of cancer cells. The treatment is often part of systemic therapy and may be paired with hormone therapy or another medicine. It is not appropriate for every cancer or every person. The oncology team uses tumour features, previous treatment, other health conditions and medicine interactions to choose the regimen. Treatment is commonly given in repeated cycles, with monitoring between doses or visits.

Ask which drug is planned, how it is taken, and what monitoring is needed. The team may check blood counts and liver function and review other medicines before or during treatment. Report fever, infection symptoms, unusual bruising, persistent diarrhoea, marked tiredness or new breathlessness. Keep a current medicine list and avoid starting supplements or new medicines without checking for interactions. Follow the prescribed schedule, including any planned breaks, even when you feel well.

Contact the oncology team promptly for a fever, chills, sore throat, unusual bleeding, severe diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin, dark urine, or a sudden worsening in your condition. New or worsening shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting or severe weakness needs urgent assessment. Do not take an extra dose or restart treatment after a missed dose until the treating team gives instructions.
