Is breast reconstruction done with breast implant?

An implant is a medical device placed beneath breast tissue or chest muscle to create breast shape after mastectomy or another breast operation. Reconstruction may be immediate or delayed. Some people receive an implant directly; others first have a temporary tissue expander that gradually prepares the chest area. The surgeon considers available skin, chest-wall tissues, previous or planned radiotherapy, healing factors and the desired size and shape. Implant reconstruction does not recreate a natural breast exactly, and sensation may differ from before surgery. The operation may also involve reshaping the other breast for balance.

Ask a breast or reconstructive surgeon to compare implant reconstruction with reconstruction using your own tissue. Discuss the number and timing of operations, the implant position, likely scars, recovery, and how future cancer treatment could affect the result. Tell the team about smoking, medicines, previous operations and any planned radiotherapy. Review the implant information and learn which changes should prompt a follow-up visit. After surgery, contact the clinical team promptly for fever, increasing redness, drainage, wound opening, severe or worsening pain, marked swelling, or a sudden change in breast shape. Seek urgent help for chest pain, fainting, or difficulty breathing. Later changes such as hardening, persistent discomfort or movement of the implant also deserve review, even if they develop gradually.
