Is bone density scan done with DEXA scanner?

DEXA stands for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. During the scan, the machine sends two low-dose X-ray beams through selected areas, usually the hip and lower spine. A computer compares how much energy passes through bone and soft tissue, producing a measurement of bone mineral density.

The result helps a clinician assess bone strength and the likelihood of osteoporosis or a fracture. It is a measurement, not a diagnosis made from symptoms alone. Results are interpreted alongside age, medical history, previous fractures, medicines, and other risk factors.

Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners if the imaging centre advises it. Tell the team if you may be pregnant, have recently had a contrast examination, or cannot lie comfortably. Follow the centre's instructions about calcium supplements and eating before the appointment, because preparation can vary.

The scan is usually performed while you lie still on a padded table. It does not require an injection, and the scanner passes over the body without enclosing you. Keep still and breathe normally while images are taken. Ask when and how the report will be explained.

A DEXA scan is planned testing rather than emergency care. Contact the imaging centre if pain, limited movement, or a recent injury makes positioning difficult. Seek urgent care after a significant injury if you have severe pain, cannot bear weight, or notice a new deformity; do not wait for a routine scan to investigate those symptoms.

Ask which body areas will be scanned, why the test is recommended, how to prepare, and when the result will be reviewed. Ask what your measurement means in the context of your fracture history and medicines, and whether follow-up monitoring or bone-health measures are appropriate.
