Is biologic therapy done with adalimumab?

Adalimumab is a laboratory-made antibody that targets tumour necrosis factor, an immune signal involved in inflammation. It is given by injection under the skin and may be prescribed for selected inflammatory skin diseases or other immune-mediated conditions. Biologic therapy is a treatment category, not one single drug, so adalimumab is one option among several. The diagnosis, previous treatments, infections, vaccinations, pregnancy plans, and other medicines can all affect whether it is suitable.

Before starting, tell the prescriber about current or recent infections, tuberculosis exposure, hepatitis history, recurrent infections, cancer history, nerve disorders, heart failure, allergies, and all medicines. Screening tests may be arranged before the first dose. Learn injection storage, handling, site rotation, and missed-dose instructions from the clinical team. Do not stop or restart treatment on your own. Keep scheduled reviews so the response, injection sites, blood results when needed, and infection risk can be assessed. Discuss vaccines before treatment because some vaccines may not be appropriate while immune activity is being modified.

Contact the treating team promptly for fever, persistent cough, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, painful urination, unusual wounds, or an infection that is worsening. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, severe allergic symptoms, new weakness or numbness, chest pain, or sudden neurological changes. A painful, hot, or increasingly swollen injection site also deserves advice. The prescriber may tell you to pause a dose during certain infections, so ask for a plan before illness occurs.

Ask why adalimumab is being considered, what improvement to expect, how injections will be taught, and which symptoms should delay a dose. Discuss screening, vaccines, travel with refrigerated medicine, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and interactions with other treatments. Ask how progress will be reviewed and what alternatives exist if it is unsuitable.
