Is anti-d injection done with anti-d immunoglobulin?

Anti-D Immunoglobulin is an antibody preparation. The injection is used in pregnancy care when a clinician identifies a risk that a rhesus-negative pregnant person may be exposed to rhesus-positive fetal blood cells. The medicine helps prevent the pregnant person's immune system from making antibodies against the rhesus factor. The need for it depends on blood-group results, pregnancy events and local clinical guidance. It is not a treatment for every type of bleeding or pregnancy problem.

Make sure your maternity team has your blood-group and antibody-screening results. Tell them about bleeding, abdominal injury, invasive procedures, miscarriage, pregnancy loss or delivery, because these events may affect whether an injection is advised and when it should be given. Keep the appointment information and report any previous reaction to blood products or injections. Do not arrange or delay Anti-D treatment based only on a home blood-group result; ask the maternity team to assess your situation.

Seek urgent maternity advice after bleeding, abdominal trauma, or a procedure during pregnancy, even if the bleeding is light or has stopped. Go for urgent assessment if you have severe pain, heavy bleeding, dizziness, fainting or feel acutely unwell. After an injection, seek help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a rapidly spreading rash; mild soreness at the injection site should still be reported if it persists or worsens.

Ask whether your blood group and antibody screen indicate a need for Anti-D, what event has prompted the recommendation, and when it should be given. Ask what symptoms after the injection need urgent help and how your result will be recorded for future maternity care.
