Short answer

Sudden irregular periods can follow changes in hormones, stress, weight, medicines, contraception, or ovulation, so track the pattern and arrange assessment if it continues or concerns you.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Track
Bleeding dates, flow, pain, medicines, and associated symptoms.
Possible mechanism
A change in ovulation can alter when bleeding occurs.
Urgent signs
Severe pain, fainting, dizziness, or heavy bleeding need prompt care.

What a sudden change can mean

A cycle may become earlier, later, shorter, longer, lighter, or heavier when ovulation changes. Anovulation means an egg is not released during a cycle and can make bleeding unpredictable. Polycystic ovary syndrome, perimenopause, and premature ovarian insufficiency are other possible explanations, depending on your age and accompanying symptoms. A change does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Note the first day of bleeding, how long it lasts, flow, spotting, pain, new medicines, stress, sleep, weight changes, and symptoms such as acne, excess facial hair, hot flushes, or vaginal dryness. These details help a clinician decide whether pregnancy testing, blood tests, or an examination may be useful.

What you can do now

Record each bleed in a calendar or app and keep a note of missed periods and any unusual pain. Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible, even when bleeding has occurred. Do not start hormone tablets or supplements without medical advice. A clinician may discuss treatment based on the cause, such as the combined pill for cycle control or metformin for PCOS when appropriate.

Bring a list of medicines and contraception, including when any device or pill was started or changed. Mention breastfeeding, recent illness, major exercise changes, or eating difficulties because these can affect ovulation.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical review if irregularity keeps recurring, periods stop unexpectedly, bleeding becomes unusually heavy, or you develop persistent pelvic pain. Seek urgent care for severe or one-sided pain, fainting, marked weakness, or heavy bleeding with dizziness. If pregnancy is possible and pain or bleeding occurs, seek prompt assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Could my symptoms suggest an ovulation or thyroid-related problem? Which tests are appropriate? How should I track bleeding, and what treatment would protect my health while the cause is clarified?
