How to check pregnancy with irregular periods

A late period is less informative when ovulation does not follow a predictable schedule. Pregnancy can occur before the next expected bleed, while Anovulation can also delay bleeding without pregnancy. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, recent breastfeeding, stress, medicines and Perimenopause may alter timing. Symptoms such as nausea or breast tenderness cannot confirm pregnancy on their own.

Use a home urine pregnancy test according to its instructions and consider testing when enough time has passed since sex that could lead to pregnancy. If the result is negative but bleeding has not started, repeat the test after several days or ask a clinician about a blood test. Record test dates, results, bleeding and symptoms. Use contraception if pregnancy is not desired, because irregular periods do not reliably prevent ovulation.

Seek urgent assessment for a positive or possible pregnancy with one-sided pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, dizziness or shoulder-tip pain. Contact a clinician for repeated negative tests with ongoing missed periods, or for symptoms that are new or worsening.
