Irregular periods with heavy bleeding

When ovulation is irregular, the uterine lining may build and shed unpredictably, causing bleeding that is prolonged or heavier than your usual pattern. Anovulation and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can present with irregular bleeding. Perimenopause may also change timing and flow. Pregnancy-related bleeding, fibroids, polyps, thyroid conditions and medicines are other possibilities, so the bleeding pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

Track the start and end of bleeding, spotting, clots, pain, fatigue and how often you change period products. Arrange a medical review; the clinician may check for anaemia, pregnancy and causes affecting the uterus or hormones. Do not start or stop hormonal treatment without advice. Options such as the Combined Pill may suit some people, but choice depends on health history and pregnancy plans.

Seek urgent help if bleeding is rapidly soaking products, you feel faint or short of breath, or you have severe pelvic pain. If pregnancy is possible, pain with bleeding, fainting or shoulder-tip pain needs urgent assessment. Even without those warning signs, recurrent heavy bleeding warrants a timely appointment.
