Irregular period after egg retrieval

Egg retrieval follows ovarian stimulation, which temporarily changes the usual hormone pattern. The next bleed may come earlier or later than expected, and flow can differ from your usual period. If an embryo transfer or other fertility treatment followed, pregnancy can also alter bleeding and needs to be considered with the clinic's testing plan.

Some people have pelvic fullness, cramping, or light spotting after the procedure. Worsening abdominal swelling, breathlessness, vomiting, reduced urination, or rapid weight change can indicate a complication that needs prompt fertility-clinic advice. Longer-term irregular cycles may instead reflect anovulation, polycystic ovary syndrome, thyroid changes, or another condition.

Follow your fertility team's instructions and record bleeding, pain, abdominal swelling, medicines, pregnancy-test results, and any change in urination or breathing. Do not stop prescribed medication or begin hormonal treatment without checking with the clinic.

Contact the clinic if the period does not arrive when they predicted, bleeding remains unusual, or symptoms continue after the immediate recovery period. They may arrange an examination, ultrasound, or blood test and will tell you when pregnancy testing is reliable for your treatment cycle.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or increasing abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, breathlessness, chest pain, repeated vomiting, marked swelling, or passing very little urine. Contact your fertility clinic promptly for fever, worsening pain, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Early advice helps distinguish expected recovery from a complication.
