Irregular menstruation after miscarriage

After a miscarriage, the womb and hormone cycle need time to return to their previous pattern. The first bleeding may be different in amount or timing, and ovulation can occur before the next period. A new pregnancy is therefore possible soon after a miscarriage, depending on individual circumstances. Ongoing bleeding, continuing pregnancy symptoms, infection, or tissue remaining in the womb can also affect recovery. Follow the care plan you were given and record bleeding, pain, temperature, discharge, and pregnancy symptoms. Ask when a pregnancy test or review is advised, because hormone levels can take time to settle. Use contraception if you want to avoid pregnancy while recovering, and discuss when you feel ready to try again. Contact a clinician promptly for fever, worsening abdominal pain, foul-smelling discharge, ongoing heavy bleeding, dizziness, or pregnancy symptoms that do not improve. Seek emergency help for severe pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding causing weakness. One-sided pain with dizziness or a possible pregnancy needs urgent assessment because an ectopic pregnancy can be dangerous.

Ask whether recovery is progressing as expected, when to test for pregnancy, whether an ultrasound is needed, and how future pregnancy or contraception plans affect follow-up.
