What should you know about iron sucrose infusion?

Iron sucrose is given through a small cannula into a vein by trained staff. It may be considered for iron deficiency anaemia when oral treatment is not tolerated, absorption is poor, or iron needs to be restored without relying on tablets. Your clinician reviews blood results, symptoms, medical history, pregnancy status, and any previous infusion reaction before recommending it.

You may feel coolness at the cannula, a metallic taste, nausea, headache, or temporary flushing. Staff monitor you during the infusion and for a period afterwards. Tell them if the cannula site hurts, swells, or becomes unusually uncomfortable, because the infusion may need to be paused and checked.

Before treatment, mention allergies, asthma, inflammatory conditions, liver or kidney problems, pregnancy, and all medicines. Eat and drink according to the clinic's instructions, and plan enough time for observation. Do not take extra iron unless your prescriber says to do so. Arrange the blood-test follow-up they recommend so the response and the underlying cause can be reviewed.

Tell staff immediately about itching, hives, wheezing, throat tightness, sudden dizziness, chest discomfort, or difficulty breathing during the infusion. After leaving, seek urgent help for facial or throat swelling, fainting, severe breathlessness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Contact the clinic about persistent fever, significant muscle or joint pain, or a painful swollen infusion site.
