What should you know about an iron infusion IV drip?

A healthcare professional places a small cannula into a vein and gives the iron solution over a monitored period. The team checks your history, current medicines and blood results before treatment. Intravenous iron may be considered for iron-deficiency anaemia when tablets are not tolerated, do not restore iron adequately, are poorly absorbed or are not suitable for the situation.

You may notice a cool feeling in the arm, headache, nausea, flushing, muscle aches or changes around the cannula site. Rarely, a serious allergic reaction can occur, which is why observation during and after the infusion is part of safe care.

Tell the team about previous reactions to iron, allergies, pregnancy, inflammatory illness and every medicine or supplement you use. Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to your arm and follow instructions about eating, drinking and returning to normal activities.

Remain for the observation period advised by the clinic. Keep the cannula area clean and report pain, swelling, rash or breathlessness promptly. Follow-up blood tests may be arranged to see whether iron stores and haemoglobin are improving.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, widespread hives, fainting, chest tightness or severe dizziness during or after treatment. Contact the clinic for persistent vomiting, a painful swollen infusion site, or symptoms of iron deficiency that continue despite follow-up.
