Iris Melanoma: Understanding Your Outlook

A single population figure cannot predict what will happen for one person. Your eye cancer team can put the findings from your examination, scans and pathology into context for you.

Iris melanoma is a melanoma arising in the coloured part of the eye. Clinicians consider where the tumour is, its size and appearance, and whether nearby structures are involved. They also assess whether there is evidence of disease beyond the eye.

These details guide both treatment planning and the discussion of prognosis. A diagnosis of iris melanoma deserves specialist assessment, but it does not by itself describe the course for an individual patient.

Keep appointments with the ophthalmic oncology team and bring a list of symptoms, medicines and questions. Ask which examinations or imaging tests are being used to define the tumour and to check for spread.

Treatment may focus on controlling the tumour while protecting vision and comfort where possible. Depending on the clinical findings, the team may discuss local treatment, surgery, or care coordinated with cancer specialists. Planned monitoring remains important after initial treatment.

Contact your eye care team promptly for a new or rapidly changing dark spot on the iris, a noticeable change in the shape of the pupil, worsening vision, flashes, new floaters, eye pain or persistent redness. These symptoms need assessment because they can have different causes.

Seek urgent eye care for sudden major vision loss, severe eye pain, or a painful red eye with nausea or vomiting. Tell the clinician about any previous eye tumour diagnosis or treatment.

Ask what features of your tumour matter most in your case, what the staging assessment has shown, and what changes should prompt an earlier call. It is also reasonable to ask how treatment could affect vision, eye pressure and everyday activities.

Ask who will coordinate follow-up, how often you need eye examinations or other checks, and whether a second opinion from an ocular oncology service would be useful. Clear written instructions can make follow-up easier to manage.
