What should you know about ir vertebroplasty?

IR vertebroplasty is an image-guided procedure that places bone cement into a painful vertebral compression fracture to stabilise the weakened vertebra. Interventional radiology uses imaging to guide a needle through the skin. The cement hardens inside the weakened area and may improve mechanical stability and pain for selected patients. It does not rebuild all lost bone strength or treat every cause of back pain.

Vertebroplasty is considered most often when a vertebral compression fracture remains painful despite appropriate initial care, and imaging confirms the fracture is responsible. The team reviews symptoms, scans, medicines, bone health and infection risk. Kyphoplasty is a related procedure that may first create a space with a balloon before cement is placed. Neither procedure replaces assessment for osteoporosis or another underlying cause.

Before treatment, provide a full medicine list and tell the team about allergies, bleeding problems, infection symptoms or pregnancy possibility. Ask which medicines to pause and whether fasting is needed. Afterward, follow instructions about wound care, activity and pain relief. Gradually returning to movement, physiotherapy and treatment for low bone strength may be part of preventing further fractures.

Contact the treating team promptly for increasing back pain, fever, wound redness or drainage. Seek emergency help for new leg weakness, numbness in the saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain, breathing difficulty or sudden severe headache. These symptoms need assessment rather than observation at home.

Ask whether the fracture is active and whether it explains your pain, what conservative options remain, and why vertebroplasty is being considered. Discuss kyphoplasty, anaesthesia, cement-related risks, recovery restrictions, expected follow-up and how osteoporosis will be managed afterward.
