What should you know about IPTp malaria?

IPTp stands for intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy. A clinician gives scheduled medicine during pregnancy when it is recommended for the person’s location and malaria exposure. It is prevention, not a substitute for assessment if fever or other symptoms develop.

Malaria is transmitted by infected mosquitoes and can become serious during pregnancy. Fever, chills, headache, sweating, weakness, or muscle aches should be taken seriously after travel or residence in an area where malaria occurs. Symptoms can have other causes, so testing is needed rather than relying on symptoms alone.

Tell the maternity team about travel, residence, mosquito exposure, allergies, other medicines, and any previous malaria treatment. Take preventive doses exactly as directed and mention vomiting or missed doses, because the clinician may need to advise what happens next.

Use mosquito-bite precautions recommended for pregnancy, such as suitable repellent, covered clothing, and sleeping under an appropriately treated bed net where advised. If illness is possible, arrange prompt clinical assessment and ask whether a blood test is needed.

Seek urgent medical care for fever during pregnancy after possible malaria exposure, especially with chills, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, severe weakness, or reduced alertness. Do not wait for a scheduled preventive-treatment visit. A clinician may arrange testing and treatment that is suitable for pregnancy.
