IPL permanent hair removal: what to know

Short answer

IPL permanent hair removal uses pulses of broad-spectrum light to reduce hair growth over repeated treatments, but results vary and maintenance may be needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Light type
Broad-spectrum pulsed light
Best expectation
Long-term reduction rather than complete removal
Key precaution
Do not treat tanned or irritated skin

How IPL hair reduction works

IPL targets pigment in the hair shaft and follicle. The light becomes heat, which can weaken a growing follicle. Because hairs cycle through active and resting phases, one session cannot affect every hair at once. Darker hair often provides more target pigment, while very light, grey, or red hair may respond poorly. Skin tone, tanning, hair colour, treatment area, and device settings all influence suitability.

The word permanent can be misleading. IPL is better described as long-term hair reduction: some hairs may return, become finer, or need occasional maintenance. It is different from a photofacial, which uses light for selected skin concerns.

Preparing for treatment

Read the device instructions or arrange a consultation before treating a new area. Avoid using IPL on recently tanned or sunburned skin, and protect the area from ultraviolet exposure. Shave as directed so light reaches the follicle; do not wax or pluck beforehand if the instructions require the root to remain present. Clean and dry the skin, remove products, and use the recommended eye protection.

Start with the lowest suitable setting and perform a patch test when advised. Do not pass over the same spot repeatedly in one session. Mild warmth, redness, or a stinging sensation can occur briefly. Follow the schedule supplied for that device rather than increasing the energy or frequency yourself.

When to pause and get help

Stop treatment and seek medical advice if you develop blistering, marked swelling, severe pain, a spreading rash, or skin colour changes that persist. Urgent assessment is sensible for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or widespread blistering. A new or changing pigmented mark should be examined rather than treated cosmetically, because IPL can alter its appearance and make assessment harder.

Useful questions to ask

Ask whether your hair colour and skin tone are suitable, which areas should be avoided, how medicines or skin conditions affect treatment, and what maintenance plan is realistic. Ask who will choose the settings and how a concerning reaction will be handled.
