IPL hair removal device: what should you know?

The light is absorbed by colour in the hair and converted into heat near the follicle. Only hairs in a suitable growth phase respond at a given visit, so treatment is normally planned across several sessions. Hair may shed gradually, and regrowth can become finer or less noticeable rather than stopping immediately. Response varies with hair colour, skin tone, body area, hormonal changes, and the quality and settings of the device.

A cool sensation, warmth, or brief pinching may be felt. Mild redness around follicles can follow treatment. IPL is not the same as an IPL photofacial: hair reduction focuses energy on follicles, while a photofacial is planned for selected colour or redness concerns.

Arrange a consultation before treating a new area, particularly if you have a darker skin tone, recent tan, tattoos, active eczema, infection, or a medicine that increases photosensitivity. Shave as instructed, keep the skin clean, and avoid waxing or plucking if the clinician needs the follicle present. Protect treated skin from sun and follow aftercare directions. Never flash over a mole, tattoo, open wound, or irritated patch unless specifically instructed.

Get advice from the provider for persistent intense burning, blistering, scabbing, significant swelling, or a new light or dark patch. Prompt assessment is appropriate for spreading warmth and redness, discharge, fever, or eye symptoms. These findings can signal a burn, infection, or another problem needing treatment.

Ask whether your hair and skin contrast is suitable, which body areas can be treated, how sun exposure affects timing, and how the device will be tested on your skin. Confirm what to do with medicines, tattoos, moles, and unexpected reactions.
