IPL hair removal and skin rejuvenation devices: what to know

Short answer
An IPL device uses brief, broad-spectrum light pulses to reduce hair growth and address selected pigment or redness concerns.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the device works
IPL is light-based rather than a conventional laser. Its energy is absorbed more strongly by colour in the hair shaft and follicle, which can gradually reduce regrowth over a planned series. The same broad light can be selected for some superficial brown marks or visible redness, but hair removal and skin rejuvenation use different settings and goals. Results depend on hair colour, skin tone, the target problem, hormonal influences, and the device used.
A treatment area may feel warm, prickly, or like brief snapping during a session. Temporary redness around follicles can occur. Darker skin or recently tanned skin needs especially careful assessment because surrounding pigment can absorb light and become irritated.
Preparing and caring for your skin
Have the area assessed before treatment, including any tan, active rash, infection, unusual mole, or medicine that increases light sensitivity. Follow the clinic’s instructions about shaving, sun exposure, and products. Do not treat over irritated or broken skin. Afterward, keep the area cool, avoid deliberate sun exposure, and use the recommended sunscreen and gentle skin care. Do not increase the device setting yourself to chase faster change.
When to seek care
Contact the treating clinic if swelling, blistering, crusting, marked pain, or colour change is more than expected or continues to worsen. Seek prompt medical assessment for spreading redness, pus, fever, eye pain, or a change in a pigmented spot. A clinician can distinguish a treatment reaction from another skin condition.
Useful questions
Ask which target is being treated, why IPL is suitable for your skin tone, what settings and eye protection will be used, and how an active tan or medication changes the plan. Ask how hair removal differs from an IPL photofacial and what aftercare is expected.

Questions people ask
Can one IPL session treat hair and pigmentation together?
Sometimes, but the clinician must choose settings for the specific target and assess whether combining goals is appropriate for your skin.
Does IPL treat every type of unwanted hair?
It is less effective when there is little colour for the light to target, and hormonal regrowth may need a different plan.
