What should you know about IPL for sun spots?

Sun spots are areas of extra pigment linked with cumulative ultraviolet exposure. IPL sends a broad range of light into the skin; pigment absorbs part of that energy and may darken, flake, and gradually look lighter as the skin heals. IPL is not the same as a laser, and the best choice depends on the spot's appearance, depth, skin tone, and whether the diagnosis is certain.

A dark patch can have causes other than sun spots. A clinician may examine it closely before treatment, especially if it has an irregular outline, several colours, a new symptom, or a noticeable change. Options may include an IPL photofacial, picosecond laser treatment, chemical peel, or cryotherapy when appropriate.

Avoid recent tanning and tell the provider about medicines, active skin conditions, a history of pigment changes, and products that increase irritation. Do not pick at darkening or flaking after treatment. Use gentle skincare and protect the area from sunlight with shade, clothing, and sunscreen as advised.

Keep photographs of spots that are being monitored, using similar lighting and distance. Cosmetic treatment should wait if a lesion has not been diagnosed or if the skin is sunburned, infected, or open.

Arrange prompt assessment for a spot that changes in size, shape, colour, or sensation, or one that bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, or does not heal. After IPL, seek advice for blistering, severe pain, spreading redness, pus, or a persistent light or dark patch.
