Short answer

An IPL cooling hair removal device uses flashes of light to target hair pigment while a cooling surface helps protect and soothe the skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the device means for your skin

Intense pulsed light, or IPL, sends broad-spectrum light into the skin. The light is absorbed more strongly by melanin in the hair than by the surrounding tissue. Heat then travels toward the hair follicle, which can reduce its ability to produce new hair over a course of treatments. IPL is different from a laser because it uses a wider range of light wavelengths.

A cooling window, plate, or contact surface is designed to lower heat at the skin surface during a flash. You may still feel warmth, a brief snap, or mild prickling. Cooling can make the session more comfortable, but it does not remove the need to follow the device instructions or use the correct setting for your skin and hair.

How to prepare and use it

Read the manufacturer’s instructions before the first use and check whether the device is suitable for your skin tone, hair colour, treatment area, and medical history. Test a small area as directed. Start with clean, dry skin; avoid applying perfume, deodorant, oils, or irritating products over the treatment area unless the instructions allow them.

Do not flash over tattoos, dark moles, open skin, active rashes, or recently sunburned skin. Keep the cooling surface flat against the skin if the instructions require contact, and never look directly at the light. Protect treated skin from strong sun and stop if the heat becomes sharply painful rather than merely warm.

When to seek care

Mild redness or warmth can occur briefly after IPL. Stop using the device and contact a healthcare professional if you develop blistering, marked swelling, severe pain, spreading redness, pus, or skin colour changes that do not settle. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or widespread hives.

A clinician should review persistent irritation, a burn, or a reaction around a mole or other pigmented spot. Do not treat over worsening eczema, infection, or an unexplained skin lesion until it has been assessed.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether IPL is appropriate for your skin tone and hair colour, whether any medicines or skin treatments increase light sensitivity, and which areas should be avoided. You can also ask how to manage a reaction, when to resume other skincare, and whether professional hair-removal treatment would be safer for your situation.

Questions people ask

Does the cooling feature make IPL painless?

No. Cooling may reduce surface heat and make flashes easier to tolerate, but warmth, snapping, or prickling can still occur.

Can I use a cooling IPL device on a mole or tattoo?

Do not flash over moles, tattoos, or other dark pigmented areas unless a qualified professional has specifically advised that it is appropriate.

What should I do after using the device?

Follow the device aftercare instructions, avoid strong sun on the treated skin, and pause use if irritation becomes painful, blistered, or persistent.
