IPL and freckles: what to know

Freckles contain increased melanin, which can absorb IPL energy. After treatment, a freckle may look darker before it gradually flakes or fades. New freckles can appear again with sun exposure because IPL does not remove the tendency to make pigment.

Not every brown mark is a freckle. Moles and other pigmented lesions can resemble one another, and light treatment can alter their appearance. Examination before a session is therefore part of safe planning, especially for a spot that is new, changing, uneven, bleeding, or different from the others.

Arrange a skin assessment before booking IPL for facial pigmentation. Tell the clinician about recent tanning, pregnancy, medicines that increase light sensitivity, cold-sore history, and products that irritate your skin. Use broad-spectrum sun protection and avoid deliberate tanning before and after treatment.

Follow the clinic's instructions about cleansing and skincare. Do not pick at darkened or peeling areas. The clinician may recommend IPL Photofacial or another approach depending on the mark's appearance, your skin tone, and the likelihood of pigment changes. A Picosecond Laser Treatment may be considered in selected cases, but it is not automatically better for every spot.

Ask for prompt review if a treated area blisters, becomes increasingly painful, develops spreading redness, or shows pronounced lightening or darkening. Have any untreated or treated spot assessed urgently if it changes quickly, bleeds without clear injury, forms a persistent crust, or does not heal.
