IPL and diode laser: what to know

Short answer

IPL and diode laser both target hair pigment, but IPL uses broad-spectrum light while diode laser delivers a more focused wavelength.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

IPL
Broad-spectrum pulsed light
Diode laser
Focused laser light
Main target
Pigment in the hair follicle

What the difference means

IPL is not a laser. It releases a range of light wavelengths, while a diode laser emits a narrower band designed to reach pigment in the hair follicle. The hair absorbs light and converts it to heat, which can slow growth. Only hairs in a suitable growth phase respond at a given visit, so treatment is normally planned as a course rather than a single session.

Results depend on hair colour, skin tone, hair thickness, hormonal influences, and the device settings. Darker hair generally provides more pigment for the light to target; very light, grey, or red hair may respond poorly. A consultation helps identify whether the device and settings fit the treatment area.

How to prepare and compare options

Ask which technology is being used, who will perform the treatment, and how the settings will be selected for your skin tone. Avoid tanning before treatment and follow the clinic's instructions about sun exposure and skincare. Shave if advised, but do not wax or pluck hairs shortly beforehand because the follicle is the target.

During treatment, you may feel warmth or brief snapping sensations. Temporary redness around follicles can occur. Follow aftercare advice, protect the area from sunlight, and avoid irritating products until the skin settles. Compare plans by safety assessment, device suitability, and aftercare—not by the device name alone.

When to seek care

Contact the treating clinic if swelling, blistering, marked pain, crusting, or colour change is more than mild or does not settle as expected. Seek prompt medical assessment for signs of infection, such as spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, or fever. A clinician should also assess a new changing skin mark before light treatment is considered.

Questions for your doctor

Which device is appropriate for my skin tone and hair colour? How will you test the setting on my skin? How many visits might be needed, and what maintenance should I expect? Which medicines, tanning history, or skin conditions could change the plan?

Questions people ask

Are IPL and diode laser the same?

No. IPL uses a broad range of light, whereas a diode laser emits a focused wavelength.

Can either treatment remove every hair?

Neither should be described as removing every hair. Response varies, and maintenance may be needed.
