Short answer

Anaemia in pregnancy means the blood has too little haemoglobin to carry oxygen efficiently, commonly causing tiredness and requiring a blood test to guide treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main test
A blood count with follow-up tests when needed
Common cause
Low iron stores, though other causes are possible
Treatment
Depends on the cause and may include iron therapy

What anaemia means during pregnancy

Pregnancy increases the body's need to make blood and haemoglobin. Anaemia can develop when iron stores are low, although other causes include low folate or vitamin B12, inherited blood conditions, inflammation, or blood loss. A person with anaemia in pregnancy may notice tiredness, reduced stamina, dizziness, headaches, paleness, or a racing heartbeat, but some people have no clear symptoms.

A blood count helps confirm the finding, while further tests can help identify the cause. The result is interpreted alongside your stage of pregnancy, symptoms, diet, medical history, and previous blood results. A low haemoglobin result is not a diagnosis of the cause by itself.

What to do next

Attend the blood tests and antenatal reviews offered to you. Take iron or another supplement only as advised, because the correct treatment depends on the cause and severity. Iron treatment may be given by mouth, and intravenous iron may be considered when oral treatment is unsuitable or does not restore levels adequately.

Include iron-containing foods such as beans, lentils, meat, fortified cereals, and leafy vegetables in a balanced diet. Ask how to take prescribed iron, since tea, coffee, calcium, and some medicines can affect absorption. Keep a note of constipation, nausea, or dark stools so your clinician can help you manage side effects.

When to seek urgent care

Contact your maternity service promptly for worsening breathlessness at rest, chest pain, fainting, a persistently racing heartbeat, marked weakness, or bleeding. Seek emergency help if you collapse, struggle to breathe, or have heavy bleeding.

Tiredness alone has many possible causes in pregnancy. However, new or rapidly worsening symptoms deserve assessment, especially if you already know your haemoglobin is low or cannot keep prescribed treatment down.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which type of anaemia your tests suggest, whether you need iron studies or other blood tests, how treatment will be monitored, and when your blood count should be repeated. Discuss options if tablets cause troublesome stomach symptoms.

Questions people ask

Does tiredness in pregnancy always mean anaemia?

No. Tiredness has many causes, so a blood test is needed to check whether anaemia is present and identify the likely cause.

Can I stop iron tablets if they make me constipated?

Speak with your maternity clinician first. They can review the dose, timing, formulation, or another treatment option without leaving the anaemia untreated.
