What should you know about intertrochanteric bursa?

How the structures involved in Bursitis differ from normal

Short answer

The intertrochanteric bursa is a cushioning sac near the outer hip; irritation there can cause local tenderness and pain when lying on that side or walking.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Location
Outer upper hip beside the greater trochanter
Common trigger
Pressure, walking load or repeated hip movement
First approach
Modify aggravating load and use guided rehabilitation

What it means

This bursa sits beside the upper outer thigh, where tendons and other tissues move near the bony prominence of the hip. Repeated friction, pressure, a change in activity or altered walking mechanics may irritate it. Pain is often felt on the outside of the hip and may spread a short distance down the thigh. Climbing stairs, rising from a chair, lying on the painful side or standing for long periods can be uncomfortable. A clinician checks hip movement, strength and tenderness because similar symptoms can come from tendons, the lower back or the hip joint. Joint swelling is a broader symptom with several possible causes.

Practical treatment steps

Temporarily reduce repeated stairs, long walks or side-lying pressure if they reproduce the pain. Gentle hip movement is usually preferable to complete rest, and a physiotherapist can build strength around the hip while correcting load and movement patterns. Your clinician may consider Anti-Inflammatory Medication if it is suitable for you. A Cortisone Injection can be discussed when localized symptoms persist despite conservative care. Joint Aspiration is not routine for every outer-hip pain problem and is reserved for situations where fluid evaluation or drainage is relevant.

When to seek care

Book a clinical review when outer-hip pain interferes with sleep, walking or work, or continues despite modifying the provoking activity. Get prompt care after a fall if you cannot bear weight, or if the hip is hot, markedly swollen, accompanied by fever, or suddenly much more painful. New numbness or weakness should also be assessed because the source may not be the bursa.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the tenderness is coming from the bursa, a tendon or the hip joint; which exercises and sleeping positions are appropriate; and how long to try activity modification before review. Discuss medication suitability, the purpose of any injection, and which symptoms would change the plan.

Questions people ask

Can outer-hip pain come from something other than a bursa?

Yes. Tendon irritation, hip-joint problems and referred pain from the back can feel similar, so examination helps distinguish them.

Should I stop walking completely?

Usually the aim is to reduce painful load rather than stop all movement; use comfort as a guide and follow an individualized plan.
