What should you know about intertrigo yeast infection?

A yeast infection in a skin fold causes a moist, irritated rash where warmth, friction and trapped moisture allow yeast to multiply. Common sites include beneath the breasts, in the groin and between abdominal folds.

The affected skin can be red, sore, itchy or cracked, with a shiny or damp surface. Small spots just beyond the main rash can occur. Intertrigo can be confused with contact irritation, bacterial infection or eczema, so location and appearance matter. A fold rash does not by itself prove that vaginal thrush is present; vaginal discharge, vaginal itching or vulval pain may point to a separate problem.

Gently wash the area and pat it dry rather than rubbing. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change damp garments promptly. Keep skin folds separated with clean, dry fabric if advised. Do not apply perfumed products or steroid cream without guidance, because some products can irritate skin or mask infection. A clinician or pharmacist can recommend an antifungal treatment for thrush when yeast is the likely cause.

Arrange medical advice if the rash spreads, becomes very painful, cracks deeply, smells unpleasant, drains fluid or does not improve with appropriate care. Seek prompt assessment if you have fever, rapidly increasing redness, or reduced immunity. Repeated episodes may need review for moisture, friction, medication or an underlying health factor.
