What should you know about intertriginous rash?

Friction, sweat, tight clothing, and limited airflow can weaken the skin barrier in a fold. Intertrigo is one possible explanation; yeast, ringworm, or bacteria may grow in damaged moist skin. Contact dermatitis can follow a new soap, deodorant, detergent, or fabric. Heat rash, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, drug rash, and scabies can also affect or resemble a fold rash. Burning, itch, odour, scaling, small edge spots, or drainage provide useful clues, but they do not identify the cause by themselves.

Wash gently, pat every fold dry, change out of damp clothing, and choose loose breathable fabrics. Avoid fragranced products and rubbing the affected skin. Do not use a steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic cream repeatedly without advice, because the wrong product can mask the pattern or worsen some infections. A clinician can inspect the fold and may test a scale or swab when the diagnosis is uncertain or the rash keeps returning.

Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, severe pain, pus, open cracks, fever, or feeling unwell. Arrange an appointment when the rash persists despite careful drying, repeatedly returns, involves several areas, or occurs with diabetes or reduced immunity. Rapid worsening deserves same-day advice.

Ask which causes fit the appearance, whether a swab or skin scraping would help, and which cleansing and drying routine is suitable. Mention new products, medicines, sweating, recurrent episodes, and treatments already tried so the plan can target the cause.
