Interpreting Flow Cytometry: What the Results Mean

Flow cytometry examines individual cells as they pass through a laser-based instrument. It can describe cell size, internal features and proteins called markers on or inside cells. A report may list a cell population, the markers detected, and whether the pattern is expected or unusual for that sample.

A result is not read from one marker alone. Specialists compare combinations of markers, the proportion and strength of expression, and whether cells form a recognisable pattern. The sample might come from blood, bone marrow, lymph-node tissue or another fluid. A finding described as abnormal can require correlation with a microscope examination, blood counts, imaging or a biopsy.

Ask the clinician who ordered the test to explain the conclusion in the context of your symptoms and examination. Bring the complete report rather than relying on an isolated phrase such as negative, positive or atypical. Confirm whether the sample was adequate, which cell population was assessed, and whether additional testing is planned.

If the test was part of a bone marrow assessment, the flow result is one component of the overall interpretation. Keep a record of the date, sample type and any recommended follow-up. Do not change treatment based on a laboratory phrase without the treating team’s explanation.

Contact your care team promptly if the report is accompanied by worsening fever, unusual bleeding, marked weakness, breathlessness or rapidly enlarging swelling. These symptoms need clinical assessment regardless of whether the flow cytometry wording sounds reassuring. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding or confusion.
