What should you know about an intermediate lung nodule?

A lung nodule is a small rounded area seen on a scan. It may reflect an old infection, inflammation, scar tissue, or another non-cancerous change; some nodules require assessment for cancer. The appearance, size, location, edges, growth over time, smoking history, age, and previous cancer history all affect interpretation.

An intermediate category signals uncertainty, not a diagnosis. Comparing the current image with older scans can show whether the area is stable or changing. A CT scan provides detailed views of the nodule and surrounding lung, while a biopsy may be considered when tissue would change management.

Ask which features placed the nodule in an intermediate category and when the next scan or review is due. Keep previous imaging available so the radiology team can compare it. Do not smoke, and tell your clinician about cough, breathlessness, fever, weight change, or coughing blood.

Follow-up can involve repeat CT imaging, specialist review, or biopsy. The safest choice depends on the nodule and your health; missing an appointment can make comparison more difficult.

Seek urgent care for coughing up more than a small streak of blood, severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pain with sweating or faintness, blue lips, or confusion. Contact your clinician promptly if a persistent cough, fever, or breathlessness is worsening.

Ask what the nodule looks like, whether older images are available, what follow-up interval is planned, when biopsy would be useful, and which symptoms should prompt earlier review.
