Interferon for hepatitis B

Chronic hepatitis B can remain quiet while the virus affects the liver. Interferon works by changing immune activity and may reduce viral activity in suitable patients. It is not appropriate for everyone; the choice depends on liver inflammation, viral tests, existing illnesses, pregnancy considerations, and previous treatment. A liver function test and other blood tests help the clinician understand liver health and treatment response. Fatigue, flu-like symptoms, mood changes, and changes in blood counts can occur.

Use interferon exactly as prescribed and attend planned blood tests and reviews. Keep a record of fever, tiredness, mood changes, skin symptoms, or injection-site reactions. Discuss other medicines, supplements, alcohol use, pregnancy plans, and any history of depression or autoimmune disease before treatment. Avoid stopping or changing doses without the prescribing clinician, because hepatitis B activity can change when treatment is altered.

Contact your treatment team promptly for severe mood changes, thoughts of self-harm, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, persistent vomiting, marked weakness, or signs of liver deterioration such as dark urine or yellowing of the eyes. Fever that is severe or does not settle also deserves advice. Urgent help is needed for confusion, collapse, or serious bleeding.
