What should you know about intense headache pregnancy?

Head pain in pregnancy may follow dehydration, a missed meal, poor sleep, emotional strain, heat exposure, or a change in usual caffeine intake. Blocked or inflamed nasal passages can produce pressure around the forehead and cheeks, while infections may add fever, cough, sore throat, or body aches.

A new intense headache can also occur with pregnancy-related high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia. A clinician may need to check your blood pressure, urine, symptoms, and neurological function because the pattern of pain cannot establish the cause on its own.

Rest somewhere cool and quiet, drink fluids in small regular amounts, and eat if you have gone without food. Note the start time, severity, location, suddenness, vision symptoms, swelling, fever, and any medicines used.

Speak with your maternity clinician before using pain relief or cold remedies. Pregnancy changes which medicines are appropriate, and a product that helped before pregnancy may not suit you now.

Go to urgent care for a sudden severe headache, confusion, fainting, seizure, weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking, major vision change, stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or severe upper abdominal pain.

Call your maternity service promptly if the headache persists, returns repeatedly, occurs with new swelling or high blood pressure, or is accompanied by reduced fetal movement. Arrange help with transport if you feel unwell or your vision is affected.
