What should you know about intense body aches?

Short answer
Intense body aches can result from an infection, physical strain, inflammation, or another health problem, so assess them alongside your other symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What intense body aches can mean
An ache may feel deep, widespread, tender, or worse when you move. Viral illnesses such as Influenza and COVID-19 commonly present with body aches, often alongside fever, chills, tiredness, cough, sore throat, or other respiratory symptoms. Dengue Fever and Malaria can also present with marked aches, particularly after travel or mosquito exposure; fever, headache, rash, nausea, or shaking chills may provide useful clues.
Aching after unfamiliar exercise, heavy lifting, or a minor injury may reflect muscle overuse. More persistent or widespread pain can occur with Fibromyalgia, while Hypothyroidism may cause muscle aches with low energy, feeling unusually cold, dry skin, or constipation. Long COVID can involve ongoing muscle or body aches after an earlier COVID-19 illness. Brucellosis is another possible infection, especially after contact with infected animals or unpasteurised dairy products. These patterns guide an assessment; they do not identify the cause on their own.
What you can do now
Rest from strenuous activity, drink fluids regularly, and keep a note of when the aches began and where they are strongest. Check your temperature if you feel feverish, and consider whether you have had a recent infection, new medicine, unusual exertion, travel, insect bites, or an injury.
For pain relief, ask a pharmacist or clinician which option fits your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions, and current medicines. Follow the product directions and avoid combining products that contain the same pain-relieving ingredient. Arrange a medical review if severe aches are not easing, keep returning, or interfere with walking, sleep, work, or daily activities.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for intense aches with trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion, a stiff neck, a new widespread rash, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Get prompt assessment for very dark urine, much less urine than usual, or severe pain after major exertion, because these can signal a serious muscle or whole-body problem.
Contact a clinician promptly if body aches come with a persistent or high fever, repeated vomiting, unusual bleeding, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or a recent stay in a malaria-risk area. People who are pregnant, very young, older, immunocompromised, or living with significant long-term illness should seek advice earlier when symptoms are intense.
Questions for your doctor
You could ask: What causes best fit the location and timing of my aches? Do I need an examination or tests? Which pain medicine is suitable with my other medicines or health conditions? Could my recent travel, infection, exercise, injury, or medication be relevant? What changes should prompt urgent help?

Arrange a review when aches are severe, persistent, recurrent, or limiting normal activities. Seek urgent help if they occur with breathing trouble, confusion, severe weakness, dark urine, or inability to keep fluids down.
What information should I bring to an appointment?
