Integrative manual therapy

Short answer

Integrative manual therapy combines hands-on techniques with movement advice and active exercises tailored to the person, rather than relying on manipulation alone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main approach
Hands-on care is combined with movement and exercise.
Your role
Share warning symptoms and practise the agreed active plan.
Stop and seek help
New weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control is urgent.

What a session may involve

A physiotherapist may assess posture, joint movement, muscle tone, strength, and the activities that bring on symptoms. Treatment can include gentle joint mobilisation, soft-tissue techniques, guided movement, breathing or relaxation strategies, and a home exercise plan. The pressure and technique should be adjusted to your response.

Manual therapy may be included in care for conditions such as cervical spondylosis, myofascial pain syndrome, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, or whiplash. It is used to support movement and function; the underlying condition, nerve findings, injury history, and general health still guide the plan.

Making treatment useful

Tell the therapist about pain changes, numbness, dizziness, osteoporosis, recent injury, surgery, pregnancy, and medicines that affect bleeding or alertness. During treatment, describe sharp pain, spreading symptoms, or unusual dizziness rather than trying to tolerate them silently.

The active part of rehabilitation matters. Practise the agreed exercises, vary positions during the day, and track which activities improve or aggravate symptoms. A hands-on session can provide short-term relief or make movement easier, but progress is judged by function over time, not by how intense the technique feels.

When to seek medical review

Seek urgent care for new limb weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe trouble walking, fainting, chest pain, or a serious injury. Neck symptoms with severe headache, speech or vision changes, or sudden balance problems also need prompt assessment. Pause therapy and contact the clinician if symptoms steadily worsen after a session.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what diagnosis is being treated, which manual techniques are appropriate, what active exercises should accompany them, how progress will be measured, and when another assessment is needed.

Questions people ask

Is manual therapy a replacement for exercise?

Usually it is one part of care; active exercises help build movement confidence, strength, and self-management.

Should manual therapy hurt?

Some techniques may feel like pressure or stretching, but sharp or spreading pain should be reported and the approach adjusted.
