What should you know about an insulinoma PET scan?

An insulinoma is a tumour of pancreatic cells that release insulin. Extra insulin can make blood glucose fall and may cause sweating, shaking, blurred vision, confusion, or fainting. A PET scan looks for areas where the chosen tracer collects more than expected; the CT part shows anatomy so the team can match tracer activity to a body structure.

The scan may be considered when blood tests suggest insulinoma but earlier imaging has not clearly shown its position. A scan result is interpreted alongside symptoms, glucose and insulin measurements, and other imaging. A bright area is not automatically cancer, and a scan that does not show a lesion does not by itself exclude the diagnosis.

Your imaging team will give fasting and medicine instructions. Tell them about diabetes, medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any difficulty keeping your blood glucose stable. A small amount of tracer is given through a vein, followed by a waiting period while it travels through the body. You then lie still during the scan; keeping still helps the images remain clear.

Bring a list of medicines and ask how to manage symptoms of low glucose during preparation. The team may monitor you if fasting could trigger symptoms. Afterward, follow the department's advice about food, fluids, and contact with other people.

Seek urgent medical help for severe confusion, a seizure, loss of consciousness, or symptoms of low blood glucose that do not improve with the treatment plan given to you. Arrange prompt clinical advice if repeated episodes of sweating, trembling, visual change, or unusual behaviour are occurring, especially when you have not eaten.

Ask what tracer is planned, whether fasting or medicine changes are needed, how low glucose will be managed, and what the next step will be if the scan finds or does not find a likely lesion.
