Instant relief for threadworms: what to do

Threadworms, also called pinworms, are small intestinal worms. Itching around the anus, often worse at night, happens when adult worms lay eggs near the skin. Scratching can move eggs to fingers, clothing, bedding, toys, and shared surfaces. Some people have little or no itching. Abdominal pain is not specific to threadworms, and bedwetting in a child can have several causes, so these symptoms need context rather than an assumption about the diagnosis.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician which threadworm treatment is suitable for the person affected and household members. Follow the product directions carefully, including whether a repeat dose is needed. Wash hands with soap after using the toilet and before eating; keep nails short, avoid nail biting, shower in the morning, and change underwear daily. Wash sleepwear, towels, and bedding regularly at a hot setting suitable for the fabric, and avoid shaking laundry. Clean frequently touched surfaces and do not share towels.
